Solid Timber, Yaka

Yaka, commonly known as Pacific Rimu, is a beautiful, lesser-known timber from Fiji and parts of the Pacific. It has a warm, natural appearance, with heartwood that varies from pale yellowish-brown to a more golden or reddish-brown hue, often with subtle dark streaks. The sapwood is usually lighter in color, offering a pleasing contrast. Its grain is typically straight, although it may occasionally display a slightly interlocked or wavy pattern, adding to its visual appeal.

Sizes available: 128 x 19mm / 165 x 19mm / 172 x 19mm / 200 x 19mm / 200 x 19mm / 210 x 19mm / 220 x 19mm

Finish: Can be Stained, Polyurethaned, and Oiled

Surface Type: Smooth

Scientific Name: Dacrydium nidulum

The fine texture of Pacific Rimu gives it a smooth, refined surface, making it an excellent choice for polished timber floors. Yaka is versatile and can take well to various finishes, from staining to oiling and polyurethaning, allowing it to fit into both traditional and modern interior designs.

Dacrydium nidulum is part of the podocarp family and grows primarily in Fiji. The trees are typically medium to large, with heights ranging between 25-40 meters, and they have relatively straight trunks. The timber is moderately dense, making it strong and durable but still workable for craftspeople and builders.

Yaka is valued for its durability and strength, making it suitable for a variety of applications, including flooring, joinery, and high-end furniture. Its natural resistance to wear and tear means that it holds up well in both residential and light commercial spaces.
