Designed by Ken Crosson, principal of Crosson Architects, the DNA House is an architectural triumph, winning a 2018 NZIA Waikato/Bay of Plenty Housing Award. Nestled into the Otama Beach landscape on the Coromandel Peninsula, the home is a stunning interplay of protection and openness.
The bold, blackened exterior is softened by bi-folding perforated metal screens that filter light and frame spectacular coastal views, while inside, the natural warmth of American Oak flows seamlessly across the floors, up the walls, and even encases the ceilings. The result is a calming, organic interior that embraces its environment.
Movement through the house mirrors the natural terrain, with soft transitions of ramps and steps leading to shared living spaces that spill onto decks overlooking the landscape. Thoughtful design details, like a stargazing hatch in the timber ceiling, celebrate the home’s connection to the natural world.
Described as otherworldly, DNA House is both sculptural and serene—a true retreat that balances strength, beauty, and innovation, making it one of New Zealand’s most celebrated architectural achievements.
